early in April, and will be published on the
East Glamorgan website. All first round losers
will be entered into the Consolation tournament,
except defaulting teams.
Fees
The entry fee for the Summer Knockout and
Consolation Cup will be specified annually.
Teams
A team may represent a club, or where necessary
a combination of clubs. There is no limit to the
number of teams a club may enter.
All players must be registered members of the
East Glamorgan Chess Association; infringement
of this rule will result in the automatic
disqualification of the team
concerned.
Registration
Each team must give details of the following
upon entering the competition:
Details of their venue,
Playing day,
Starting time,
Details of the team Captain/Organizer,
An approximate guide to the playing
strength of the team(s).
Matches
All matches are played over 4 boards. Players
are permitted to only play for one team,
throughout the duration of the competition.
Board colours shall be determined by the toss of
a coin. The winner of the coin toss,
can choose their preferred colour for board 1,
with alternating colours on the boards
thereafter.
Time Control
Each player will have 75 minutes within
which to play all moves. (1 hour 15 mins)
Tie-break
In the event of the match being drawn, a
result should be obtained using the Bottom Board
Elimination method. Thus, the bottom results in
the match should be
eliminated until a clear result is
reached.
Where a definite result cannot be
obtained, the match should be replayed
immediately. Colours should be reversed and each
player will have 5 minutes on
their clock.
Board Ordering
Team Captains will arrange players within
teams in order of playing strength. A
tolerance of 100 points for an adult and 150
points for a junior will apply.
Grading
The Summer Knockout and Consolation Cup
Competitions are ungraded events.
Score sheets
The keeping of a score sheet is not
compulsory, but is necessary should a player
wish
to claim a draw. A player may not use a third
party to keep score during the game.
Claiming a Win on Time
A player can win on time only if he stops the
clock’s showing his opponent that his flag has
fallen and his own has not.If the player
claiming the win does not have sufficient
material to win the game, then the game is
deemed a draw.
Should both flags have fallen, then the game is
drawn irrespective of which flag fell first.
Claiming a Draw
A draw can be claimed under the normal rules of
chess if the player has a fully completed score
sheet and the following apply:
50 consecutive moves have been made by each
player without the movement of any pawn and
without the capture of any piece.
If the current position on the chess board has
appeared 3 or more times, the game can be
declared a draw by either of the opponents. It
is not required that the same position occurs
three times during the consecutive moves.
However, it usually happens this way in
practice.
2-Minute Rule
When a player has less than two-minutes on the
clock, but before his flag falls he may stop the
clocks and claim a draw on the grounds
that:
(i) the Position cannot be won by normal means
(ii) his opponent has been making no attempt to
win by normal means
In either case the claimant must record the
final position and provide a completed score
sheet. The claim, together with a deposit of
£5.00 should be submitted to the competition
controller, who may refer the matter to an
arbiter of his choosing. The arbiter’s decision
will be final.
If the claims is withdrawn or rejected the
claimant will lose the game and the deposit will
be forfeited. Should the claim be successful,
the deposit will be refunded.
